Understand first
I want you to have clarity—not dependency
For more than three decades, I have worked around construction, homes, and building systems in the National Capital Region. In recent years, I have personally attended more than 4,000 homes. That experience helps me recognize patterns and know where to look, but every home still deserves its own careful reading of the evidence.
Homes often give us signs before they give us answers. My job is to help you understand what those signs may be telling us, preserve the evidence, and make an informed decision with greater confidence. I am not there to steer you toward a repair or make you dependent on BUILD Intelligence. When your question has been answered, you should feel ready to move forward with clarity and confidence.
A small example of how I thinkAt Christmas, remove your downspout extensions for the winter. At Easter, reattach them so melting snow and spring rain can be directed away from your home.
The advice is simple by design. A well-timed preventative action can sometimes spare a homeowner a much larger and more expensive problem.
Why I built BUILD Intelligence
A repair recommendation does not always answer the homeowner’s question
As more people remain in their homes longer, established neighbourhoods can receive a steady stream of offers. You may hear, “We’re doing work for your neighbour, and they suggested we speak with you.” The person at your door may be sincere, and a five-star contractor may do excellent work. But a sales conversation—even one with a trusted company—is not an investigation of your home. Someone trained to explain a product may not yet understand the particular conditions behind your concern.
I have met many homeowners who received several different proposed solutions and were left wondering what they truly needed. A waterproofing contractor may see waterproofing. An insulation contractor may see insulation. Another specialist may focus on drainage or foundation repair. Each may be offering an honest perspective through the work they know best, but the homeowner can still be left asking, “What is actually causing my problem?”
That is why I built BUILD Intelligence: to give you a calm, independent place to start before urgency or uncertainty leads to an expensive decision. My goal is to help you understand what needs attention now, what may need attention in the near future, and what may not warrant action at all. What BUILD Intelligence provides first is information—not construction work.
This became especially important to me after significant flooding and water-damage events in our region. Emergency response, insurance assessment, remediation, and reinstatement all serve important purposes. Yet restoring a home can cover or remove physical evidence before anyone has fully examined why the water entered. That is a difference in objectives—not a suggestion that someone acted dishonestly. I simply want the relevant evidence understood and preserved before it disappears behind new finishes.
What I want for you
Enough understanding to make your own confident decision
I have spent years learning how homes behave. I cannot prevent every problem, but I can help you slow things down, understand what the evidence is saying, and avoid making a costly decision out of fear. I will document what the accessible evidence supports, explain what remains uncertain, and help identify a practical next step.
Your investigation will remain focused on the concern you asked me to examine. But if something important catches my eye while I am there, I will tell you. Experience in other homes may help me recognize a condition worth bringing to your attention, even when it falls outside the original question. That does not turn the visit into a whole-home inspection. It simply means I will share something that may help you, just as I would want someone to do for my own family.
Sometimes the right next step is a contractor. Sometimes your concern needs an engineer, architect, or another specialist, and part of looking out for you is telling you so clearly. Sometimes the evidence does not justify an expensive intervention at all. I am a Lead Investigation Consultant, and I will always be honest about where BUILD Intelligence’s role ends.
Every home has a story. If something I have learned over the years can help make yours a little easier, I will always take the time to share it.— Dale
